LASIK- Lasik stands for Laser In-situ Keratomileusis. LASIK is a procedure in which the curvature of the eye is altered to reduce nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. In this procedure, a flap is created from the surface of the cornea with an instrument called a microkeratome. After the flap is made, it is turned back to expose the inner layer of the cornea, which is then reshaped with the laser. Finally, the flap is put perfectly into place.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) or now better described by the name of Advanced Surface Ablation (ASA) uses the same laser as in Lasik, but there is no flap made. PRK starts from the top surface of the eye, changing the shape with the extraordinary precision of the Excimer Laser. This process removes only 5-10% of the thickness of the cornea for mild to moderate myopia and up to 30% for extreme myopia -- about the thickness of 1 to 3 human hairs.

PRK is the procedure of choice in those with certain eye diseases, thin corneas or those with a high likelihood of significant ocular trauma. The major benefit of this procedure is that the integrity and the strength of the cornea is retained and there is no flap made. The Excimer laser is set at a wavelength of 193nm, which can remove corneal tissue with a precision of 0.25 microns. The laser can treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.

Modern PRK has little in common with early PRK, which was the laser procedure first performed in 1988. Modern PRK, also known as Advance Surface Ablation (ASA) is an extremely safe procedure. The United States military performs approximately 10,000 laser procedures per year and 85% of them are PRK. PRK has the advantage over Lasik in that there is no cutting and therefore no flap. There is no risk of a flap moving with trauma and for this reason, we recommend PRK to anyone involved in contact sports where it is likely that they are going to be hit in the eye such as those involved in boxing, martial arts or those in the military who may go in to combat.

Pain, risk of scarring and long healing period have been mostly eliminated with modern techniques and the use of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative medications.

CK-NearVision CK (Conductive Keratoplasty) is a non-laser procedure developed specifically for baby boomers who have had clear vision all their life, but now struggle to see life's details with reading glasses. NearVision CK is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that involves no cutting of your cornea. And it is performed using the ViewPoint™ CK System, the only FDA-approved technology for the temporary improvement of near vision. This makes it an ideal procedure for people over 40, for whom safety is often the most important factor in their decision to undergo a vision correction procedure.

Using radiofrequency (RF) energy, NearVision CK can change how the eye focuses light by reshaping the cornea to make it steeper. After the doctor has applied a topical anesthetic (eye drops), controlled RF energy is applied in a circular pattern to shrink the corneal tissue.
