Margaret M. McNelis, O.D.

Dr. Margaret McNelis is a graduate of Indiana University School of Optometry in 1990. She holds an undergraduate degree from University of Illinois in Champaign in 1985. Dr. McNelis has medically-based Optometric training, beginning with her residency at North Chicago Veteran's Hospital. She was on staff in a multidisciplinary medical center as a primary eye and vision consultant, concentrating in pediatrics, contact lenses, ocular injuries and infection treatment.

In 1993, she joined Eye Surgeons and Consultants. She has been active in the comanagement of various refractive procedures including RK, ALK, LASIK, PRK, Intacs and cataract surgery. She is skilled in complex contact lens fitting of diseased and irregular corneas. She has evaluated and cared for more than 14,000 laser refractive patients

She enjoys teaching and research, and is a contributing author to a reference textbook, as well as a practice guide, and has given presentations at local and national meetings. She has been a member of the American Optometric Association and the Illinois Optometric Association since becoming an optometrist in 1990.

She is married and has two daughters and a young son. She enjoys camping and the great outdoors, especially since having LASIK. Her hobbies include gardening, cooking and broomball.

Dr. McNelis provides very efficient and thorough exams. When children come in to get their eyes examined they leave our office with smiles on their faces. When I became a CMA (Certified Medical Assistant) I never thought of working in the ocular field, but I am so fortunate that I have the opportunity to do so. Working at McNelis Family Eyecare has been the most excellent experience for me. Dr. McNelis is by far one of the greatest people I have ever worked for, and I love working in a positive environment with a team that aims to please every single person that patronizes our office. I am also so happy to be a part of the refractive surgery- Lasik/ PRK and CK- performed here. It is a gratifying experience to have someone come in who cannot read the big E on the eye chart before surgery and is 20/20 on the day after their procedure. It is things like this that make my job so rewarding.

I just recently started to work for Dr. McNelis, but I have been a patient of hers for nearly 15 years. I am so impressed with the skilled care she administers to all her patients. I am also amazed at the patience she has with the children who come to our office. Five years ago I had my Lasik procedure. It is an awesome feeling not to have to put on contacts or glasses first thing in the morning. If you are looking for skilled, caring and compassionate eye care, you have found it in Dr. McNelis, she’s the BEST!!! And she has a great laugh.
